Movie Research: Home Alone

 

What elements (Conventions) of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

Home Alone uses close shots to make a scene funnier, like when Marv tries to enter the McCallister’s house using the doggy door, and when Kevin’s mom realizes that he’s not there and yells “KEVIN!” They also use violence as humor, like when Marv gets hit in the head with an iron and when Harry’s head gets lit on fire. When Harry and Marv are trying to break into Kevin’s house there are a lot of quick cuts between scenes of them being in pain.

 

What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that you like?

I really like the traps that Kevin sets in his house. I also like the slapstick comedy because its funny that a kid always wins against two idiots. I especially like when they zoom in during scenes to make the scene funnier and when they switch to a camera showing the same scene from a funnier angle.

 

What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?

I didn’t really like the part of the movie when Buzz barfs up Kevin’s pizza. That part is funny I just don’t like it as much as the other parts of this movie. I also didn’t think it was that funny that Old Man Marley was the guy that got the last hit on Harry and Marv.

I asked my friend Conner to review by movie. I wasn't really sure what he would think, but I was excited to get his reaction. He is in my class, so we could watch it together. The first time we watched it, he laughed when my parents found out I was invisible. He thought it was funny that my dad was looking for me in the dishwasher. He also laughed when I stole my dad's breakfast.  When we got to the part where I put chocolate sauce on my brother's bagel, he asked why my hand was in the shot. I explained that I had thought about that before we shot the footage. I decided that since the movie was shot from my perspective and I didn't know that I was invisible, I would have been able to see my hand. As a result, I thought it was okay to include that shot. My Pitch

Pitch A:   A boy is watching a scary movie with his brother when he hears the doorbell ring. Pitch B:   A boy wakes up one morning and realizes his family members can’t see him. In Pitch A, a boy and his brother are home alone watching a scary movie. They are worried they may have made the wrong choice of movie. Suddenly they hear knocking at their door. They pause the movie and listen. They hear more knocking and unusual sounds outside. Finally, they work up the courage to answer the door… and it’s the pizza delivery man. In Pitch B, a boy wakes up one morning and heads to the kitchen as usual. But when he gets there and says hello to his mother, she can hear him, but she can’t see him. He is literally right in front of her, and she cannot see him. Once he realizes what’s happening, he decides to go for mischief. A funny morning of pranks follows. Re-Editing Blog

After I looked over the movie at the end of my last blog, I found some things that I wanted to change. One of these things was the title screen showing the actor's names. It looked like the picture included in this blog, but I wanted the names to be center aligned. After I changed it in the PowerPoint I made my title screens on, I used the Snipping Tool to cut out the slide and save it as a PNG file. I then uploaded the picture to CapCut, and placed the original. After this, I edited it to be in the movie for the same length of time as my other title screens.  Another thing I had to change was the Music By title screen since I didn't have anything on it. I didn't have anything on it because I wasn't sure my movie needed music, however I knew it was a requirement. So I needed to find a song and get that edited in to the movie.
