Movie Research: Spaceballs


What elements (Conventions) of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

Spaceballs includes many of the conventions of comedy films including a very funny script. One of the common camera movements in the comedy genre is when the camera gets hit by something in the movie. In Spaceballs, Dark Helmet gets hit by the camera after saying “There is only one man who would dare give me the raspberry…Lone Starr.” This is funny because we thought the camera was zooming in on his face, but then it hit him, and he fell over. One common acting technique in comedy films is violence for laughs. In Spaceballs, this is used in the schwartz fight scene between Dark Helmet and Lone Starr when Dark Helmet accidentally hits one of the film crew and blames it on Lone Starr. Another common acting technique is when they use deadpan delivery. This is used in Spaceballs when Dark Helmet and Colonel Sandurz are watching the movie to find out where Lone Starr, Barf, Dot Matrix, and Princess Vespa went. During this scene, they skip too far ahead and end up at the scene that is currently happening in the movie. In this scene they have a conversation about what is happening in the movie and Dark Helmet says, “When will then be now?” to which Colonel Sandurz replies’ “Soon.” This is funny because they have this conversation with straight faces the whole time.

 

What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that you like?

One of the things I really liked in Spaceballs was when Dark Helmet gets hit by the camera. I also like the scene where Dark Helmet accidentally hits one of the film crew and blames it on Lone Starr. In addition, I liked when Dark Helmet and Colonel Sandurz are watching the Spaceballs to find out where the main characters went, they skip too far ahead in the movie and end up at the scene that is currently being filmed.

 

What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?

Spaceballs is one of my favorite movies. Because of this there is not really anything I dislike about the movie. If I had to pick one thing however, I would probably pick the scene when Princess Vespa is about to get married to Princess, I mean Prince (sorry it’s the hair) Valium for the second time.

I asked my friend Conner to review by movie. I wasn't really sure what he would think, but I was excited to get his reaction. He is in my class, so we could watch it together. The first time we watched it, he laughed when my parents found out I was invisible. He thought it was funny that my dad was looking for me in the dishwasher. He also laughed when I stole my dad's breakfast.  When we got to the part where I put chocolate sauce on my brother's bagel, he asked why my hand was in the shot. I explained that I had thought about that before we shot the footage. My Pitch

Pitch A:   A boy is watching a scary movie with his brother when he hears the doorbell ring. Pitch B:   A boy wakes up one morning and realizes his family members can’t see him. In Pitch A, a boy and his brother are home alone watching a scary movie. They are worried they may have made the wrong choice of movie. Suddenly they hear knocking at their door. They pause the movie and listen. They hear more knocking and unusual sounds outside. Finally, they work up the courage to answer the door… and it’s the pizza delivery man. In Pitch B, a boy wakes up one morning and heads to the kitchen as usual. But when he gets there and says hello to his mother, she can hear him, but she can’t see him. He is literally right in front of her, and she cannot see him. Once he realizes what’s happening, he decides to go for mischief. A funny morning of pranks follows. Re-Editing Blog

After I looked over the movie at the end of my last blog, I found some things that I wanted to change. One of these things was the title screen showing the actor's names. It looked like the picture included in this blog, but I wanted the names to be center aligned. After I changed it in the PowerPoint I made my title screens on, I used the Snipping Tool to cut out the slide and save it as a PNG file. I then uploaded the picture to CapCut, and placed the original. After this, I edited it to be in the movie for the same length of time as my other title screens.  Another thing I had to change was the Music By title screen since I didn't have anything on it. I didn't have anything on it because I wasn't sure my movie needed music, however I knew it was a requirement. So I needed to find a song and get that edited in to the movie.
